Since i get many comments about Rapidshare beeing too busy and because of that many ppl cant download stuff from there, i came up with the idea, to split stuff a little.

Beginners Cleaning?

This post is about cleaning manga. Its from the prespective of myself and in general beginning cleaners.

Firstly, let me say that tutorial in the forums here was an excellent start for me (thanks geisha).

So, there is something harder about cleaning raws than I previously anticipated. This may happen to other people too, but I haven't been able to settle on a method that can quickly clean pages. The dot printing method used by the manga printing presses comes through so clearly in scans, that it makes representing shades extremely hard to preserve. I've tried bluring, filtering, levels, and just about everything else, but nothing I do seems to preserve the artists intended shading...

I'm beginning to think that to do any manga's scans justice, it would be necessary to take an extensive amount of time on each cell, basically redrawing and lining absolutely everything, 1 by 1. Its hard to imagine being able to keep up with a scan group at that time consuming pace, but obviously people do it right? How else do you explain major manga's being released weekly and often less than a day after their release in asia?

I'd just like to help, but wow! You cleaners have my respect!

Hello, everyone..I wonder Why no one talk about this manga .. The first time I read this manga, I dream about YUKI ,.. so the next day I read all the No Bra Chapter.. 24 chapter in 2 days only .. After I already finish read No Bra, it become worst, I even cannot sleep, :hammer: ..., I always wondering the continue of this manga, so I serching about this manga.. When I open ON* MANG*, I see the release date of this manga, and waw... one chapter in 1 month... aaaaaaaa OMG .. How can this great manga, become Unpopular.. I hope all the staff can consider about this manga.. Tq

found four chapters of this scanned, pretty funny (and very silly). Definitely not the greatest thing I've ever read, but enjoyable. An actual antagonist (which may have turned up in chapter 4, I hope) would be a great boost to this series >_>

Hello everyone. This is my meager introduction. I'm a 28 year old Alaskan tech and college student. In my free time I really love reading manga, and I've followed the Ubel Blatt series and wound up here at your wonderful forum site. I do some of my own digital art using gimp, and I'm attempting to learn more about type-setting and cleaning so that one day I might be helpful as a part of a manga team. I would be willing to help in other ways too and if there is need for an english proof-reader I would be glad to assist. I have some experience tutoring and helping students learn english as a second language and I've dabbled in korean and japanese studies. Well, that's about it, it's nice to be here!

Heya,

Just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm not really a forums kinda guy, but I can usually be found idling on IRC. I'm Vaane (obviously), and I'm a 20 year old male student from the UK. I edit, QC/proofread and typset for Geisha-scans, and also for a number of other groups. Uhhh, my hobbies include typical anime/manga watching and reading, as well as collecting figures/mecha kits. I'm also a big fan of martial arts, holding a black belt in Nam Pai Chu kung fu and Jujitsu, and a nikyu belt in Aikido and Kendo. I've also studied Judo, Muay Thai and Yoshindan Karate.

Can't really think of anything else to say, so feel free to ask anything you want to know

There's this game Mabinogi that I play. well use to play but can't at the moment. I think it's fun even though the graphics are... not that special... still fun though. SO i was hoping some of you would go and take a look or try to play.

Editor Guide Step 4: Typesetting

well most of you guys think typesetting is really easy and so on
but you'll see that it is not like that ^_^

Step 4: Typesetting

First you need to know the fonts you need to know for
the project you are assigned too...
its different from manga to manga...
so i am giving you a little list wich should be used and wich are good...

this ones are common in Scanlation Groups

Normal Bubbles: Wild Words, Blambot Pro
my tip: Manga Temple
Loud Bubbles: Wild Words(bold), Blambot Pro(Bold)
my tip: Yesterdays Meal
Quite Bubbles: Wild Words (smaller font size), Blambot Pro(smaller font size)
my tip: Komika Display Tight
Thoughts (colour #666666 and italics): Wild Words(smaller font size), Blambot Pro(smaller font size)
my tip: Mighty Zeo 2.0
Text outside Bubbles: augie
my tip: any font that suits the original text
Boxes: Mighty Zeo Caps (2.0)
my tip: Komika Display Wide

and chapter names, headlines and sfx's are differently, depends on
how the orginal japanese version looked like...

If you dont have this fonts or you dont have enough, then
just pm me and i am going to give you a good font pack...
or ask the scanlation group you are applying for ...

Well i would say lets get started...

Well i am using raws from School mate... as they have all the stuff
you guys need to learn...

And the cleaned versions...

I didnt bother to redraw anything, as i am very lazy right now...
and i am using cs4 now and the english version...
well maybe i am going to change the stuff i did before to english
maybe not ^_^

You can see that there are thoughts, normal text, loud text, boxes,
text outside of bubbles and sfx's... and i left the hearts...
i think they need to stay ^_^

ok lets start with the first one...
first you are using the typsetting tool, it should be a big T icon...
then you are centralizing the text...
and then we get started...
This are some examples...

So you can see i used different fonts, for you too see there any difference, and just as an example...

So it's important to get the text in the middle of the bubble...
and the text flow should be good too...
well i cant give you good hints on typesetting, because my
typesetting isnt really good,
i am experienced and thats it ^_^

Things you need to know:
if you used one font for something(bubble, loud voices, sfx)
then use that font until the end of the chapter for the same thing...
so for example you got the sfx "stomp" and you used the font "yikes"
and the sfx "stomp" is on page 2,5,14,16...
then use the same font for "stomp" on all the pages...
if you have used font size 12 for the normal text, then go with the font size 12 for normal text through the whole chapter...
text needs to be centered...
if there is text above clothes, people, or any background that isnt white... then use a white stroke for that text...

to make clear how typesetting should look like i made this example for you guys...
i used the same font for all three pics...

this is way too big... font size 15, font blambot pro

this is also too big, but much better.. font size 14, font blambot pro

this looks way better... font size 12, font blambot pro

You need leave enough space in the bubble, so it looks good
and yes i noticed that i fucked up english grammer, but i am way
too lazy, as i would correct it...

there is nothing else i could tell you about it...
if you have any questions, just ask...
so this is the end of the basics...
now have fun editing ^_^

Editor Guide Step 3: leveling&removing dust

So in this step, we learn how to level perfectly...
I got two ways doing it...
First: the perfect leveling
Second: the fast leveling
the first way is taking a little more time and is done
differently for each page, its the better way for guys
without any experience, you'll know why when you see the
way itself in the pics down...
the second way is also a good way, but it leaves some dust
and its faster and not a pain in the ass like the first one,
but it should just be done if you got experience, as
you can screw the hole page up with this step...
with my little hints you should do it perfectly, both ...

Third Step: leveling&cleaning dust Part 1

You need to level because on manga raws, there are black/white
parts that got a little bit grey while scanning them...
that means we try by leveling and manual cleaning dust, to remove these...

so we use this page again...
i rotated and cropped it already, but as it is a very lq raw, it wont be straight perfectly... just if you invest much time in editing it...
but if you use better raws it shouldnt be as dirty as this...
ok if you look close at it, you can see that the black at the bottom got
many grey dots and the white isnt really white but a little greyish ^^
so first what we do is zoom in on a place that has some blacks and some
whites on it with much dust...

as you see i zoomed in that place...
on the bottom there is the black, on wich you can clearly see that it isnt
really black and on his face you can see that its not really white...
so now you open the level menu

ebene should be layers in english, not sure though... ^_^
a menu should pop up, when you ve clicked on that...
like that...

as you cen see on the left there is this black wave like thing.
this will change from page to page and manga to manga, describing it
at this point is kinda senseless as you wouldnt understand it, but
when you get more experience you ll finde out yourself...
then you see under it the black, white and grey arrow-like things. with them you are leveling, well you wont need the grey one,
but the black one and the white one.
okay now you make sure that the thing on the right bottom has a tick in it...
that is the enablung of a preview, that means the place on wich you zoomed, will change when you change that black and white stuff, but
just for you to see how it would look like...
okay now you take the black arrow and move it to the right until
you see that the black space is fully black(well not fully black, most of the times you cant make it fully black, as it will get over leveled, that means lines are too dark now, so you should check if the page itself isnt
getting to dark)
and then you do the same with the whites, until the grey is gone, and also here you cant remove everything fully...

this one is under leveled, this means the whites were done too strong...
look at the original and you can see, that the shadings under his chin
an on his jacket are not really viewable...

this one is overleveld, as you can see the black lines are too strong...
well overleveling with this raw was pretty difficult, so i needed to
do it so extreme...

so this is the perfect version, well leveling cant be perfect... hehe
but if you look closely at it, you will see there are still grey parts in the black and soem in the white that is called dust...
and now the manual part is comming...
now you just zoom in and scan the whole page bit by bit and removing
dust with the eraser for whites or the brush for the blacks...
dont forget, that this manga hadnt any patterns in it, for example a
very light background or weird bubbles...
you have to be cautious that you dont remove stuff, that is supposed to be there...

Third Step: leveling&cleaning dust Part 2

So this part is for the experienced people or people who want to experentise a little... ^_^
this is something i made up myself and it is supposed to make your work faster, but if you dont have any experience and you use it, then it will
just make you work more...
ok we go with the same pic like in part 1...

okay now as explained before you open the level menu, but this time you need to have a look at the whole page and as near as it can be, but the whole page ^^ if you understand what i mean...

something like that...
well after many chapters that i edited, i figured out, that the waves are telling something, they kinda mean how strong the blacks and whites are...
well i am showing you what perfect leveling looks like later... so you know how it should look like, but you wont be able to do that with all manga raws,
as all of them are different and all need manual editing after leveling...
well i did it like that...

the blacks are 90% after the first wave...
the whites are difficult they are not after the first wave, but a little before that... well you need to make that up yourself...
never the less, it leaves many dots and stuff like that after leveling, but
as this step is made to get it done faster
i got another special trick for you guys...

so that is the page two times...
so you can compare better and under it the settings i used...
as you can see when you pull the black to the white as much as you can, what will happen, but dont click on ok, now you can see, wich parts were supposed to be white and got dark now, now you know for sure
on that parts there is still dust left, so you press on cancel zoom in
and remove that dust if you can remember where the rest of the dust was
you open the level menu again and look at it again ^^...
like that you wont even miss a little dot, and you can impress your boss
or for whom you are scanlating by pointing out where he left dust ^^
so now that you know what leveling is about and what the goal is...
go exerxice until the next step is out ^^

Editor Guide Step 2: Rotating&Cropping

So this is the Second Step, i divide all the steps, so it will be more
clear for you guys...

Second Step: Rotating+Cropping

A manga isnt always straight, therefore we'll rotate it.
This means that the horizontale lines need to be straight.

That is why we lay a grid over the manga.
A grid is helping you to see where the straight lines are.
Make sure "extras" is ticked and then in english it should be called
"grid".

Don't be afraid of the green lines(maybe some different colour), as
you can remove the grid by reclicking on the menu i showed you before.
So you see that the black line isnt perfectly straight, that means
the page needs some rotating.

That's how you rotate. By clicking on that another menu will pop up and will ask you if you want to rotate clockwise or the other way round. That
depends and i think you should experentise a little until you get that.
You can always redo your steps with ctrl+Z and i would suggest
to redo the step if its not right, as each time you rotate, some quality of
that page will be wasted.

That's the Menu I've talked about before. For this pic I'll rotate it with >>0,6<<, first I've tried >>0,7<<, but that was too much.
(im UZS means clockwise, and the other one is the other way round)

As you can see with the green line, that part is straight.
But then there is the problem that with rotating normally white background will appear, I made it red in this case, so you will notice it.
So it's cropping time...

You get to the crop tool by either pressing >>c<< or click on that tools in PS.
As you also can see the rest of the page gets a transparent grey colour.
You have to make sure that the red parts are in that grey area.
so either by pressing enter or confirming it with the tick on the top right corner the final pic will look like this -->

Remember that I did this on one pannel, so you guys understand normaly,
you do this with the hole manga page...
So now that the pic is straight we can go to Step 3...

Editor Guid Step 1: Greyscale

o I am going to make an Guide to clean a manga.
I'll divide that into some steps and after a few days,
I'll give you a new lesson. First I'll get the basic stuff,
then I'll add some advanced stuff, for wich you should
gain a little experience by doing some manga, either you
can clean for Geisha or for another group, as I just want
to help the people to learn it in a better way...
I know many guides and I think newbies won't understand
anything or not good enough...
But you guys have to excuse my bad english
This way of editing is not common, as i am not using any
layers or anything like that and most stuff I do is
because of my previous experience... so you guys need
to expertise a little or you'll get it after having done
some chapters for a group.
And of course if something is not clear enough just ask in here,
maybe some more people would like to know about it.

First Step: Greyscale

You guys have to make sure that the page you want to edit
is set on greyscale. This is a very low quality raw i am showing
you. It's from the manwha Sad Love Story.

As you can see it's not black and white but got some blue in it.
So you have to make sure your page is set on greyscale.

As you see my version of PS is german, but i think you should find.
When its set on greyscale, it should look like this...

When your page looks like this, we can start editing.
